Thursday Night Reflection
By admin | April 20, 2007
The Well was a great time last night. It was the second to last worship gathering of the semester for us and for me maybe ever.
The numbers were down which is a trend we see at the end of the year for some reason. But it was still a valuable experience with several new people attending for the first or second time.
The band did a good job, this might have been the best this band has done over the semester. For whatever reason they have had their share of adversity and that tends to display itself on Thursday nights but last night went really well. The sound system didn’t freak out or anything so I’d say it was good.
We’re in a series called God on Film and Chris Beggs spoke last night on About A Boy: Community. I love the movie (as a side note) and it really does raise some issues in my mind regarding community. Chris helped us see that just as Hugh Grant’s character experienced growth once he found himself entangled in community so we will when we are involved in the lives of others. He pointed to the kinds of people we’re to be in community with (those who flatter us and those who offend us), how to experience community, and what this community should look like or focus upon (justice, kindness, and humility - Micah 6.8). He did a really good job.
This upcoming week is Superman Returns: Everyone Needs A Hero. I’m excited about the topic, the movie presents some amazing intersections with the gospel message. I’m out of town until Thursday at a conference, so that should make things interesting, but I think it should be okay.
What movies come to mind when you think about the intersection of God and Film? (And just so you know, you can’t name off Left Behind and The Chronicles of Narnia type films.)

Did you plan to go out of town because you were scared that I would catch up with you in ping-pong during the last couple of weeks of school?

As I mentioned the other day, I think Crash presents some profound ideas. At the opening of the film, Don Cheadle gets rear-ended. I can’t remember his statement word for word, but the idea is that humans need to connect with each other, but our prejudices keep it from happening. So, in an attempt to connect we “crash” into each other. One of my favorite points in the movie was with Sandra Bullock and the housekeeper; how she actually connected with another human being. (not her husband or best friend either). I suppose that fits well with the idea of About A Boy.

There’s this amazing movie on redemption. This movie is about two guys who are down on their luck and sick and tired of being nobodies. So they go for it and put it all out there, what an act of faith. Anyway one of the guys accidently blows it and drives 1/6th away across the country in the wrong direction. He then ‘Redemes’ himself by buyin a sweet hog. Anyway the movie is based on a true story and has shaped countless lifes. I’ll think of it one of these days.
