      The Manifold Wisdom of God

      By jason | June 13, 2008

After One Prayer we will begin a 6 week series in Ephesians - A City within a City. I’m really excited for a lot of different reasons.

      1. On a minor note, I’m excited to have a series where we travel through a single book of the Bible.
      2. I think it will bring encouragement to believers as they see the extent to which God has accepted them (predestined and adopted in Christ).
      3. I think it will help those far from God see the extent to which God has gone to bring salvation because of Christ (we’re dead in sin but made alive in Christ to pursue the good works he’s prepared for us).
      4. I think it will help people see the great purpose of the church in the world (as the church displays the manifold glory of God).
      5. I think it will help people see the great counter-culture the church is to become, an alternative city within the city (as we develop our relational IQ).

I had been struggling to discover the best way to work through chapter 3. I still don’t have a great handle on the logic and argument but I am seeing more and more what an amazing statement this is about the nature of the church. The church is the sphere in which God displays his “manifold wisdom” (3.10). In and through the church God is glorified (21).

It only makes sense, in light of this, that how we relate to one another is vitally important (4.17-32). The world learns something of what God is like through the church. Even in her imperfections. Even in her dysfunction. If Ephesians doesn’t help you to see the importance of God’s church in his redemptive scheme then I don’t know what will.

May God display his manifold wisdom through LifeConnection (and your local church). May the world see God’s glory on display. And may that display make the name of Jesus attractive in our city.

Okay, back to preparing for One Prayer.
