The Church, Mission, Kingdom of God, & Missional and Attractional Models

      By jason | April 30, 2008

I am pretty certain that is the longest, most descriptive title I’ve ever had for a post.  Hope you’re not expecting too much after reading it. :)

There seems to be a dichotomy in many people between several poles.  And in my mind, right now at least, they seem to be quite interrelated at some level with one another.  There are the poles of the church and God’s mission (which entails the kingdom of God motif).  And there are the poles of the missional (incarnational is usually what people mean by this) and attractional models of church advancement.  And I think both of these conversations overlap one another.

Over the next few days or weeks I want to post some thoughts about these issues.  There are some things I’m working through in my own mind right now as I think about LifeConnection and our summer ministry plans.  I would love your feedback along the way.

Next time: Inviting people to church or inviting people to Jesus.

Look forward to your thoughts on the tension with each of these issues. I do believe we (the church) wrongly assume that the primary activity of God is in the church. While God is most certainly active in the church, the primary activity of God is in the world (the missio dei) and the church is His instrument sent into the world to actively participate in what He is doing. Blessings!
