      Teaching & Communication Prep Schedule

      By admin | November 13, 2007

One of the things that came out to me as I prepared for this past weekend’s Sneak Preview Service is my need for a fairly detailed preparation schedule. If I’m going to come to the place where I am working ahead of the game (2 months is my goal) then I have to develop an intentional plan and framework.

      Here is my ongoing project.

Week 8: Determine the key passage.

Week 7: Find resources that address the topic. These consist in web, print, video, movies, music, TV, etc.

Week 6: Study for the teaching in depth. Know the major argument of the text, etc.

Week 5: What are the goals and action steps for the teaching? What do we want people to do in light of this teaching? What are concrete next steps for people?

Week 4: 1) Mind map the teaching in general. 2) After this mind map with the road map in mind (Me, We, God, You, We).

Week 3: Write the manuscript for the teaching. The goal is to complete the manuscript this week, completely.

Week 2: Read and re-read manuscript many times.

Week of: 1) Read the manuscript 1x a day. 2) By Tuesday create summaries of each paragraph. 3) By Tuesday create teaching outline. 4) Don’t touch it on Wednesday. 5) Revisit the outline on Thursday, tweaking, etc. 6) Read through outline several times. 7) Saturday work through outline to internalize. 8) Sunday morning read manuscript and know outline.

Well there you have it. It is a work in progress. As I get into this animal more and more I know this will change and revise. Since I first wrote these steps down last week I have already tweaked a few things in light of how I work best.

I will also say that this is a very personal plan. I’m not trying to say this is how everyone should do it. This is how my mind works through the issues, the steps that make most sense to me. This is based on how I best prepare to teach, etc.

With the above in mind I would love your feedback. What seems to be missing? What’s your take on what I’ve outlined below?

        Loving the planning…

One thing I thought on first read. Should weeks 6 and 7 be switched? Maybe it works different for other people, but I know that if I found a really good video or song or other resource, I might try to keep it in the message by working it into my reading of the text, and it’s main direction. Also, if in the more rigorous reading of week 7 you decide to take the message in a totally different direction, then the resource is unusable, and you’ll have to do the work over to find another one. Like I say, though, that just may be how my mind works.

How about outside input/editing/whatever you want to call it? As you develop your message is there a place and need for receiving input from others? If so, where would that fit best and from whom would it be most valuable?

If there is a place and need for it, but it’s not on the schedule, it seems like it could be easy to skip over. Specifically when things get busy.

Weeks 5 - 8 is where outside input is primarily at in the process for me. the team has already developed the topic (which comes long before week 8). And in that process they have helped to determine some passages to consider for the topic (if it’s not a book study).

For week 7 I want to work on developing a team of people to research different things. So there is outside input there.

Week 6 is not only developing my own thoughts about the passage(s) but it is also commentary work and naturally conversations as well (can’t forget the commentaries as it is one way to engage the historical community).

All that then comes into play as I write and re-write. And I think will help make the talk all that much better.
