John Stott: The Cross of Christ
By jason | March 19, 2008
I finished Stott’s book Tuesday and I am struck by two things. First, I now know why it is on everyone’s short list of books to read on the cross. It is absolutely fantastic and I couldn’t more highly recommend it. It’s magisterial in it’s content and is not written merely as an academic tome; rather, it has definitely deepened my sense of awe and worship when contemplating the cross. If you have not read this book you should do so today!
I’m also realizing that John Stott is someone I need to read more of. He is a very astute thinker and yet he is a practitioner of the first order. I need to see that sort of thing modeled. He has a sense of real life issues that face ministers and isn’t merely writing from an ivory tower. Don’t get me wrong, we need the ivory tower. I benefit from the ivory tower. But it is helpful to see someone, as a practitioner wresting through pastoral issues as he does.
Over the next few days I’ll have a few more posts with some quotes from the remainder of the book. I don’t think I’ll do a full blown review, it would probably just be a fan club offering anyway. But suffice it to say, this book deserves your attention.
