      Some Good Updates

      By jason | November 3, 2007

This week we began a string of servant evangelism projects in our community. We’re really looking forward to what God might do through these.

I was thinking about why we’re doing this. On the one hand someone might use servant evangelism as a way to grow a fledgling church plant. And there’s a lot of validity in that. This certainly is a “best practice.” I know of many churches that have grown rapidly because of servant evangelism.

But if that’s the only reason to do it then you can’t count on it sustaining for long, can you? If you only see servant evangelism as a best practice you won’t be able to sustain momentum. I mean there is only so many Saturdays someone is willing to give up for the sake of adding people to a church. That’s just not worth it.

No, ultimately if service is not tied to the gospel then I think our motivations will be short lived.

Without going into great detail, the reason we serve is only tangentially tied to best practices. Ultimately the reason we serve is because God, in Jesus, radically served humanity. In humbling himself, taking the form of a servant, and dying a torturous death on our behalf Jesus displayed what radical service looks like. Anything we do on behalf of another pales by comparison. So we choose to serve humanity pointing people to King Jesus. It’s interesting how a simple act of service can open up avenues for the gospel of Jesus. Isn’t this what happen in Jesus’ own life and ministry? As he radically served others their hearts were opened to the good news.

With that here’s what we’re up to:

Trick or Treat for Can Goods on behalf of Central Independence Food Pantry.

Free packs of gum to people shopping (2x)

On-the-go foods (etc) to students at Blue River Community College (2x)

We’re praying that God will use our simple acts of service to open up doors of opportunity for the gospel. We’ll see what happens.
