      Naming A Church

      By admin | April 4, 2007

Well, as I said before we are back at square one with a church name. Therefore we are at square one with logo design, well sort of - I’m still convinced we can use a portion of the old design with the new name (we’ll see).

Here are some ideas that I have written down recently.

      The Point

      The Crossing

      Connection Church

      Refuge Church

I’ll refrain from telling you my favorite.

Just curious, what are your thoughts on these names? Which do you like? And why do you or don’t you like it?

Refuge and Connection are closer to a meaningful concept so I’d suggest those in general. Whatever you choose, I’d strongly suggest you link it to a meaningful metaphor (as it seems you’re trying to) and think about the unique audience God is calling you to speak to and what they value. (and perhaps what they should value like risk, hope, etc.)

The Point- This is the name of the KCBT annex property where they have youth ministry and misc. activities. The Point @ KCBT.

The Crossing- Sounds like a subdivision to me.

Connection Church- I like it—the theme of connections really communicates a lot in my opinion.

Refuge Church- There is something about this name that is very captivating. It draws up the picture of the mustard seed (kingdom) sprouting out, providing shade and refuge for the birds to make their nests. This is my favorite of the choices provided.

I like Connection church. There is a The Crossing in Columbia, MO that we didn’t attend because it seemed a little too focused on college students. A lot of MU grads go to the KC area, so they might be confused by there being another one or attracted to it because they liked the Columbia one.

Dusty came up with some names but they were mostly funny ones. My favorite was Allen Bible Church. Our Dallas church started a church plant in Allen, TX and that is what it was called. See funny, but not particularly helpful.

I kind of like a name with Covenant in the title. If you are looking for young families, I think covenant is really relevant since there are God’s covenants with us and the marriage covenant and of course the importance of being committed to something in our society where committment is not necessarily a prized attribute.

        Tell Carrie hi for me!

I’m not terribly original with this, but why not give Urban Life Church a go. Quite close to what you were going for. Then again, maybe i’m a big dumb animal. Talk to you later.

So sorry to hear about your bad news. I’ve been skimming the last few days and I guess I missed it until now. Ugh!

Out of that list, I think I like Connection best. I like Crossing, but CoMO has one–so that’s my original thought.

Was there a reason you didn’t go with MetroLife?

Did you have specific reasoning behind the point? It makes me think of the intersections we meet in life and making the good choice. Switchfoot says “Life begins at the intersection!”

Great thoughts. Here’s my response to many of the questions.

        1. Urban Life, while very cool, doesn’t seem to fit a church in the ‘burbs. It seems to necessitate actually being downtown or in midtown.

        2. The Point was a part of another name, maybe of another church with point in the title. I kind of liked it shortened like this. And yes that is a thought I also had. I also thought very simplistically, the point is Jesus.

        3. I kind of like Refuge, but it as I’ve had it running through my head over the last week or so it makes me think of something a bit passive. Like this is a place to come and hide from the big bad world. That’s not what we’re really wanting to be about.

Keep the thoughts coming. I appreciate it a lot.

You’re right. Connection is the best one. Carson’s idea is my favorite, but if it doesn’t fit the location then it won’t work.

I like Sarah. Call it Sarah’s Church.
