LifeConnection Leadership Values
By jason | May 29, 2008
I wanted to just post some of the things that we are striving to uphold as leaders. This is a working list of values I want us to be about as leaders. Much could be said about each but I’ve tried to give just a few sentences to explain each.
1. People before task
We want to treat people well that we lead. People are not tools to be used. So we want to focus on being before doing.
2. Verbalize don’t Internalize
For healthy teams we must verbalize our thoughts and ideas and not internalize those. If I completely disagree with an idea but don’t verbalize that how will anyone know.
3. Leaders are Learners (Competency in Ministry matters)
We must have a teachable spirit as leaders. This is one of the marks that I look for in recruiting leaders. If someone is not teachable I can promise you they will never be a leader at LifeConnection.
4. Leaders are Trainers
We must train people to do what we do. And as a church we are focusing on devising a leadership development process. This is huge for us as a church.
5. Our attitude and disposition is contagious
This is huge because if I, as a leader, am in a pissy mood that is going to get transferred to others. If I am sitting in a meeting, looking at the wall, appearing uninterested and bored it will adversely affect others. And research I’m reading backs this up.
6. Prompt communication (email, phone, other correspondence)
Especially for us as a volunteer driven church where we aren’t in front of one another every day we must be prompt in our communication. But I must admit this is also a pet peeve of mine. 24 hours is mandatory for response.
7. Teamwork
I’m convinced a team fully engaged in the process is always better than the individually going at it alone. So we must focus on healthy teams (and it should be clear that this is tied very tightly to our sense of community).
8. Fun (let’s put the fun back into fundamentalist)
Okay, so we’re not fundamentalists but I think fun is highly important for leaders. In the research I’ve seen about how attitudes are contagious having fun together is huge. And this also means spending time outside meetings together (we’re needing to do more of this).
9. No dream is too big that God has birthed (OR: no small dreams allowed)
Dreams are nothing outside of God’s guidance and direction. But as we chase hard after Jesus we need to take risks (risks to us not risks to God) that will help us reach and grow people in our city.
10. Trust, Respect, Loyalty to one another and mission
I know, to make the list shorter I mashed some things together. But as leaders we must trust, respect, and remain loyal to other leaders and the mission.
11. Leaders constantly evaluate (openness to accountability)
We must grow and develop. This is true for ourselves personally. It is also true for our process and ministry areas. That’s why our leaders are working on a self-evaluation right now as well as an evaluation of my leadership (I want to grow as a leader).
12. Always and whole-heartedly support final decisions (no dissension)
No matter how vehemently we might disagree or how bad a think a final decision might be, when we come to consensus as a group we all must support the final decision. This is so important for us to have unity as a group and as a church.
Well, these are just some of the values for us. They will probably look very different for you.
What do you think? Do you have any thoughts on these for us (I would love your feedback)?
