      Learning Through Evaluation 1

      By jason | June 18, 2008

In the last month I have had our Ministry Team take part in Self Evaluation and an evaluation of my leadership. I have never been a part of a former 360 degree evaluation process but like the idea of how it could make us better as an organization so this has been my first attempt at the process. I really have no idea what I’m doing, but knew some areas I wanted feedback on my own leadership, and it’s been eye opening, in a good way.

Our Ministry Team took part in the evaluation process. These are our ministry leaders for different facets of LifeConnection: Tech, Guest Services, KidsCo, Creative Arts, Community Groups, etc.

These are people I trust greatly (why else would they have been invited to lead?) and people I know care the mission and I know care about me and have my back. If I’m not getting honest feedback from them, good and bad, how will I grow as a leader? Not only that, but how will I be able to lead them?

I only asked 6 questions, in the hope that they would actually answer the questions. I’ve had year-end evaluations before that are so lengthy and are merely a formality that no one takes them seriously (they’re pointless).

I might also add, I’ve never been asked to give feedback about my superiors (though they are always giving feedback/crtique to me). But I want to hear from the people I lead. They know my faults and my strengths and can tell me very clearly how I’m doing. Why wouldn’t we do this?

The Questions (in case you’re curious):

      1. What are you general impressions about Jason’s leadership recently? (What has he done well? What needs improvement? Where has he dropped the ball?)
      2. Do you feel Jason supports you and your ministry area? Explain.
      3. What specific things does Jason need to improve in your mind? (Highlight at least 2.)
      4. How could Jason help you grow as a leader right now? (How does he need to help others?)
      5. How could Jason improve as a communicator in your mind? (What is going well? What needs improvement?)
      6. What other comments, suggestions, thoughts, ideas do you have for Jason as a leader?

Now don’t get me wrong, this has been a painful, growing process. But it’s an invaluable process.

      1. I have seen several patterns emerge.
      2. I have learned very clearly how people think I’m doing in some key areas (some good, some bad, all helpful).
      3. I am learning how I need to communicate to different personality types because of this evaluation.
      4. I have learned about their expectations of me.

If you aren’t evaluating how you’re leading you should.
