Leadership Quotes
By jason | April 25, 2008
Here are some various thoughts from Malphurs’ Being Leaders that I have found helpful.
First law of leadership: If you don’t believe in the messenger, you won’t believe the message. (from Kouzes and Posner, 49)
Research indicates that it takes a new pastor at least five years in most established churches to build the kind of credibility that it takes for people to follow. (52)
I haven’t seen recently but a few years ago the average pastorate in SBC life was somewhere around 18 months.
Three Pastoral Stages (53):
Chaplain Stage - someone who operates in an official capacity caring out duties the laypeople don’t feel comfortable performing.
Pastor Stage - someone who ministers to people at special times (birth, death, marriage, etc).
Leader Stage - someone whom the congregation trusts enough to give control over the church.
We expect our leaders to have a sense of direction and a concern for the future of the organization. Leaders must know where they are going. They must have a destination in mind when asking us to join them on a journey into the unknown. (from Kouzes and Posner, 59)
It’s imperative that leaders keep their people regularly informed about what is taking place in the church. The members of any organization feel an inherent need to know what’s happening in the organization. Informed people are trusting people. Uninformed people are suspicious people. (60-61)
Other than president of the United States, the three most difficults jobs in America today are president of a large university, administrator of a large hospital, and pastor of a large church. (from Peter Drucker, 63)
People in leadership have to have so much energy and passion that they energize and impassion people around them. (from Jack Welch, 79)
Effective, healthy church ministry will not happen without spiritual transformation or formation. (117)

Jason,
Thanks for citing us on your Website. We are delighted to be able to contribute. In the first part of your blog on April 25, 2008 you also cited something from Malphurs’ “Being Leaders”: “First law of leadership: If you don’t believe in the messenger, you won’t believe the message.” That is actually a quote from my and Barry Posner’s book, “The Leadership Challenge.” We first wrote that in 1987 and refereed to it as “The Kouzes-Posner First Law of Leadership.” It has been in each of the 4 editions of our book. For the most current reference, please see “The Leadership Challenge: 4th Edition” by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2007), page 38. We would appreciate it if you would let your readers know of the correct source of the quote. Thank you very much.
Love ‘em and lead ‘em,
Jim Kouzes
