Launch Sunday Recap
By jason | February 12, 2008
Wow!
I don’t know if any other word can adequately describe the experience on Sunday as we publicly launched LifeConnection. As one person on our team told me yesterday of her experience on Sunday, she nearly cried when she saw all those people in our worship space.
In the midst of all the details, all the work, all the stress our team was able to have a lot of fun on Sunday. There is something profound, I think, about the joy that comes in serving God and seeing him work right before your eyes. I definitely don’t want to become melodramatic or overly sentimental but on Sunday I think we all had a sense that history is happening right before our very eyes. God is going to do something dramatic and we get to be a part of it.
Our set up, sound checks, and volunteers prayer and worship time went amazingly well. We couldn’t have hoped for anything more than what we saw happen.
The band abso-freaking-lutely killed it on Sunday. I mean it was amazing. If this is what we do on opening Sunday what is it going to look like in a year from now. We saw people engaged during the musical worship like never before. And the response time after the teaching was awesome. The lyrics to Jesus Paid it All really captured the heart of his invitation to us all - he is the Way to the father and he accomplished that on the cross.
God’s word is powerful and he used it on Sunday. We had at least 2 people indicate that Sunday they began following Jesus for the very first time. We’re following up with them this week and are so thankful for what the Father is doing in the lives of people.
Here are some of the fun highlights our team shared on Sunday night (I’m sure I’ll forget some so chime in with a comment).
- This was the most fun I have had taking part in leading musically.
- Our bass player in one song was playing the tambourine and then let it slide up his arm so he could continue playing the bass.
- Talking to a grandmother who said she’d be back next week with her nephew.
- Seeing all the encouragement we received from friends and family who came to support us or called and emailed and texted that morning to wish us well.
- Seeing the kids really get into the lesson for the morning.
- Having friends from other churches get to experience the movement of God with us on Sunday.
Seeing the space transformed from a gym to a place of worship. (The banners for our series and the graphics for our presentation, and everything else were absolutely stunning. And we already have plans in the works to do more!)
As I told the team on Sunday, after 2 years of prayer and planning it was overwhelming to realize we were actually launching. While this was our goal (of sorts) for so long it’s really just the starting point. Now the rubber meets the road as we begin the long journey of making disciples and changing the way people think about God.
And finally, the play of the day….
Let me start by setting it up. We were checking the last minute items for our service like our launch video. Well for some reason the headphone jack for our computer wasn’t working and no matter what we did the sound would only come out of the computer’s tiny internal speaker.
I was ready to just scrap the vid and move on. And then our Tech Dude grabbed the Sound Team’s mic (used to communicate with the band during warm up), “here, try this.” We rigged it with a boom stand and played the video using the external mic playing into the microphone.
Without a doubt the play of the day!
I’m excited to see what happens over the next few weeks. You won’t want to miss this Sunday. The picture we discover of Jesus from John 2 is certainly going to be unexpected.
