In Leadership Move With The Movers
By jason | December 1, 2007
As a leader I must constantly evaluate how I’m spending my time. I only have so many hours in my day (like you) and so I have to figure out how to most strategically leverage my limited time and energy so I can give my greatest contribution to the kingdom.
I discovered a silly little phrase that has been a friend for years. It’s the principle: move with the movers.
The idea here is that as I run hard after Jesus there are going to be people around me who are wanting to move in their spiritual development. As we passionately pursue Jesus we will see people around us who want to do the same and it’s those that I give the most significant access into my life.
Think of it like this…If I have a guy who is arrogant, obstinate, thinks he’s got it all figured out and I have a guy who is a “sponge” for Jesus who should I spend time with? Should I bash my head against the wall trying to bring along mister know-it-all or should I spend time with guy who’s wanting to grow as Jesus’ apprentice?
In my own life I have always invited every guy to follow hard after Jesus. I don’t want to leave anyone behind, so to speak. But I have come into contact with my fair share of arrogant, self-absorbed guys who are more interested in displaying their “vast” knowledge of “deep” theological truth than they are with growing into the image of Christ.
So I have deliberately chosen, for good or ill I suppose, to give my time and energy to guys who desire to grow and impact the world for Christ. And I have patterned access into my life after Jesus’ model. I have some loose relationship with a crowd of people (Jesus’ crowd), I have a smaller group of people I spend significant time with (Jesus’ 12), and I have a handful that have virtually full access to my life and energy (Jesus’ inner 3). I’m not trying to claim equality with Jesus by any means, just that his life and ministry has proven a great guide for my own life and ministry.
So my question for you is who are the movers in your world?
Can you identify a handful of people in your sphere of influence to spend your time and energy resources on?
