In Leadership Look For F.A.T. People
By jason | December 2, 2007
Yesterday I tried to describe how we need to move with the movers. Today I describe another principle: Look For F.A.T. People.
In many ways this principle goes hand-in-hand yesterday’s because it helps me discern who’s moving. As I look for people who are moving I look for 3 basic characteristics.
F - Faithful
As I look for movers I want give my time to people who are faithful. Here I think specifically of people who are faithful to Jesus and faithful to the vision of the organization. This doesn’t mean I only spend time with guys who perfectly obedient to Jesus, it means I spend time with people who are faithfully following him. And secondly I want to spend time with people who are moving in the same direction that God is moving us.
A - Available
One of the best indicators that someone is moving is whether or not they are available. If someone constantly stands me up for appointments or is never available for the things of God I have to wonder if I should spend my time and energy elsewhere.
Don’t hear what I’m not saying. We all show up late and even miss appointments on occasion. We’re not talking legalism. But if someone doesn’t have time for me why should I bend over backwards to make time for them?
T - Teachable
Arrogant, puffed up believers are a dime a dozen. Why beat my head against that wall? Instead I want to spend my time with people who are teachable. This isn’t about me, it’s not “learn from me young padawan, because I have so much wisdom.” But if someone consistently determines to live contrary to the word of God why would I choose to spend time with that person over the one who is a “sponge” for Jesus?
I have seen this so often it’s not even funny. I spend my time with guys and so I have seen my fair share of arrogance. I have some guy who is so impressed by his own voice that he refuses to listen to the voice of God. And then I have a guy on the other hand who will remember things a discipler said 4 years ago. Hmmm… who do I spend my time on?
