Has Preaching Seen It’s Day? Pt 2
By jason | December 11, 2007
When I did the seminary gig I had a couple of preaching classes, Intro to Expository Preaching and then the next semester a preaching lab. In many ways these were pivotal classes for me in more ways than one.
So this morning I want to present a quote from the text we used, Rediscovering Expository Preaching by John MacArthur. In his chapter “The Mandate of Biblical Inerrancy: Expository Preaching” MacArthur claims:
The only logical response to inerrant Scritpure, then, is to preach it expositionally. By expositionally, I mean preaching in such a way that the meaning of the Bible passage is presented entirely and exactly as it was intended by God. Expository preaching is the proclamation of the truth mediated through the preacher.
So here’s my question, what do you think? Is he correct?

“…exactly as it was intended by God.” So let me get this straight. MacArthur knows EXACTLY how God intended it?? Now don’t get me wrong, I do believe that the preacher is responsible for what he says and that we must hear from God when we humbly step in front of people to share from God’s word. I am also all for good hermenuetical approaches to execute and exegete a passage of scripture, but we also must remember again, that God’s word is living and active. Yes, there are timeless truths and principles found in God’s word and so yes we must do our best to present those truths to people and we must also do our best to allow the Holy Scriptures speak to us in our current life situations, allowing the word to be applicable to our lives today, in real ways.
So it’s a matter of asking the questions of “what did the text mean then?” “what does the text mean to us today?” “what are the timeless truths?”
Good hermenuetics are always a must, and we also must allow the text to speak to us today.
I had a prof in my undergrad work who told us to remember one thing when exegeting a passage, APPROACH THE TEXT WITH COMPLETE HUMILITY
