      Film: Jesus of Montreal

      By admin | March 5, 2007

I watched Jesus of Montreal last night.  It’s been on my “to watch” list for a while but haven’t had the opportunity to check it out yet.

Basically the film is about a guy who is recruited to refurbish a struggling passion play for the diocese in Montreal.  And along the way the story of the real life actors vaguely resembles the story of Jesus - from “Jesus” (Daniel) calling “disciples” to Jesus turning over tables and cameras in a commercial audition.

The re-enactment of Jesus story through their passion play is filled with some pretty cool moments that depict the story of Jesus but is laced with modern revisionists ideas about Jesus - think Da Vinci Code, spiritual resurrection, and Jesus Family Tomb kinds of things.

You might find it interesting that this film was released around the same time as The Last Temptation of Christ, a year later actually.  This film flew under the radar a bit, probably because it was a foreign language film.  But the difference with this film and Last Temptation is the focus is less on the controversial aspects (revisioning the Jesus story) and more on living a life of love and compassion.  Surely the problem with the film is just that, Jesus is reduced to an example alone.

Has anyone else watched this?  What did you think?
