Elijah on Mount Carmel
By jason | March 20, 2008
Elijah is one my favorite characters in the scriptures (and he was a character). And it’s all about his antics on Mount Carmel. I think I like him so much because he’s a sarcastic punk (I happen to know one of those really well).
1 Kings 18. Just to set up the scene quickly. Elijah came to the false prophets with a challenge. We’ll set up offerings, yours and mine. You call on your god and I’ll call on mine and we’ll see who’s offering is engulfed in flames first. And just to make it fair Elijah doused his offering in water.
As the day went on Elijah just sat back and watched their efforts. He then started talking a little smack. Here’s some good stuff:
Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”
