Easter Preparations
By jason | February 19, 2008
Easter is only 4 1/2 weeks away! We’re a bit behind the 8 ball but working on getting all our promo materials set to go in the next week or so.
We’re going out on a limb and going to try some cool stuff for this little church.
We’re going to host a community wide Easter Egg Hunt right at Bingham Middle School (where we meet each week). We’re going to have somewhere around 20,000 eggs, free give aways throughout the afternoon, door prizes, and the grand prize of… something.
We’re going to have 3-4 2 newspaper ads for this event leading up to it. We’re planning at least one community-wide mailing to let families with children know about the event. And of course word of mouth and personal invite cards.
We also have an independent web site that is dedicated to the Easter Event. It should be live in a few days.
We’re planning some awesome stuff for our Easter Worship Experience too. The morning is going to be awesome. Money permitting we’ll send out a mailing specifically inviting people to join us on Easter morning.
We’ll see what happens.
Oh, and lesson learned. Next year we will begin marketing prep in December and January.

“Marketing prep”? I am totally fascinated, and a little bit shocked, that you feel the need to approach your church like a store’s grand opening. Have you ever considered, instead, a small marketing campaign supplemented by a great deal of prayer, the faith to believe that God will bring people to your church, and instead sending all the money you save to a needy church? Imagine all the inner-city children that could be fed with 20,000 eggs. And with the cost of 4 newspaper ads, you could pay to feed an entire village in western Africa, and maybe even purchase a few dozen mosquito nets to prevent the transmission of malaria.

Is this a serious question? Just curious.

Am I seriously encouraging you to consider the amount of money you are spending on self-promotion, and what could be done with that amount of money?
Are you seriously wondering why so many people are turned off by the American-Christian church?
Are you seriously attempting to reach people who need Christ the most?
Guess not…

Seriously???

At the risk of coming across as argumentative, I do have a few questions that I feel would be helpful in taking this scenario from accusatory to conversational:
What do you believe churches should do with the collective donated money of its members? Why do members give to churches? What proportions of our (and your) income should be designated for charitable purposes?
Could you explain more of your theory about the correlation between church marketing and apathy towards American Christianity? Have you considered that we might be trying to regain credibility with people in the city?
How should a church go about marketing itself? Have you looked into some of the acts of generosity this church has (and will) participate in)?
Who needs Christ the most? What does a serious attempt to reach them look like?

easter prep (passover)
this sounds like a question of stewardship?
but how much is a soul worth?
the nets you talk about i heard are 5 dollars each and having serving overseas i know the importance of having one and can save a life.
we do have to take care of things in our community first before we help others beyond that
the one goal is reaching people and if that takes 20000 eggs or 200000 eggs lets go for it!
i just feel sorry for the poor bunnies who got to lay all those eggs
