    Choosing Excellence

    By jason | May 12, 2008

    Part One:  Striving For Excellence

In part one I tried to describe our need to strive for excellence wherever we find ourselves (budget limitations, ministry circumstances, etc) because ultimately we are living for an audience of one.

    Priorities

In one sense we must  choose to strive for excellence but we must also choose where to excel.  One of the major ways we can strive for excellence is doing so based upon on organizational values.  Excellence for one church or organization may look different than it does for another.

One church may choose to excel in the production of their worship experiences while another may choose to excel at the process of discipleship.  Both should have the goal of reaching and growing people, but the emphases of each for accomplishing the task are different.

    The Problem of Priority Transference

I think part of our dilemma at times is transferring our priorities and emphases to others.  I have seen this first hand as we started the planting process.  Often I would meet with pastors who would only affirm their church’s process.  If our priorities didn’t line up with theirs I would get corrected (this is no lie) or in a few cases chastised.

(Here’s a freebie: the most freeing and encouraging thing I have experienced along the way are leaders who have really listened and helped us live out God’s calling on our church.  They haven’t expected us to be a clone of their ministry.  And when these people call something we’re doing into question we listen intently because I know they have our best interest at heart.)

    Determining our Priorities

If we want to strive for excellence we must first determine our personal and organizational priorities.  Doing so will help us determine our specific course for excellence.

    So what are your priorities?

This will direct where you put your time and energy to excel.
