Encouragement to Pastors From 1 Timothy

    Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. (1 Timothy 5.17)
Before I jump into, what I think will be an encouragement to pastors (it has been for me this morning) I need to set the stage a bit.
Paul’s logic here indicates the two [...]

Against Corporate Election in Ephesians 1.3-14

    Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive or hugely technical post. But after Matt’s good comment (and please hear me say that) on a corporate election perspective of Ephesians 1 I wanted to point out a few reasons I don’t think it works in the context.  I don’t have any axe to grind (let’s [...]

    Ephesians 1.3-14 Outline

    Monday, June 30th, 2008

Here is the basic outline of Ephesians 1.3-14 (not to hard to discern the major elements).
    1. Election by the Father.
    2. Redemption through the Son.
    3. Seal by the Holy Spirit.
Paul, as is typical with his writings, has a strong trinitarian emphasis.

Resources For You to Check Out

    Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Recently I have been listening to some interviews from 9Marks while I drive (one earphone in since my stereo was jacked) and while I mow.  They have some really helpful stuff and you might want to check it out.
The New Perspective on Paul with Simon Gathercole and Peter Williams. (audio)

    Ephesians 1.3-14 Wordle

    Friday, June 20th, 2008

I’m loving wordle.  Not only is it fun and very cool, but I think helpful.  Here’s a sample from Ephesians 1.3-14:

Let’s Get Controversial Up In Here…Predestination

    Friday, June 20th, 2008

    Previous Post: Divine Election
Why stop with Divine Election when we can continue on in the controversy by throwing in Predestination.
I often hear something like, “predestination is never taught in the Bible so why should we discuss it.” In that moment I’m not sure exactly how to respond since it does get used in the [...]

Let’s Get Controversial Up In Here… Divine Election

    Thursday, June 19th, 2008

I’ve been working through Ephesians over the last few months and I’m reading Hoehner’s mamouth commentary on Ephesians (it’s one I haven’t read to this point).  Very good.  Very insightful.
    Chapter 1.3-14

These verses form one single sentence in the greek and are one of eight very long sentences (1.3-14; 15-23; 2.1-7; 3.2-13, 14-19; 4.1-6, 11-16; 6.14-20).
    The [...]

    The Manifold Wisdom of God

    Friday, June 13th, 2008

After One Prayer we will begin a 6 week series in Ephesians - A City within a City. I’m really excited for a lot of different reasons.

On a minor note, I’m excited to have a series where we travel through a single book of the Bible.
I think it will bring encouragement to believers as [...]

    The Destructive Force of Gossip

    Thursday, June 12th, 2008

In a month or so we begin a series traveling through Paul’s letter to the Ephesian church. I’ve been thinking about chapter four a bit in the last few weeks and Paul’s emphasis on activity that will build healthy community (hence, my previous post about passive aggressive behavior).
Here is another community-frustrating activity that Christians [...]

    Passive Aggressive Behavior

    Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

So you’ve probably seen the Stuff White People Like site which helped spawn Stuff Christians Like. Well, here’s one that I think Christians like - passive aggressive behavior. Yeah, I know, not as fun as “How metrosexual is your worship leader” - that was hilarious, btw (link). But anyway…
    You know what I’m [...]
