Biblical Hermeneutics Today
By admin | August 28, 2007
Stephen has a little post on interpretation. It’s short so I’ll post it in full.
“Come now let us reason together,â€? says the LORD. - Isaiah 1:18a (NIV)
Three Interprestations of this verse follow:
Calvinist - God is saying be reasonable and see it my way!’
Arminian - God is saying let’s reason together so that BOTH of us contribute to this issue.
Emergent - God is saying let’s go to Starbucks and talk over coffee.’
I have two glaring issues with his post. (He says tongue in cheek)
1. NIV? You’ve got the wrong starting point. (In good Sydney Anglican style.)
2. Everyone from KC knows the Emergent interpretation would have to be (not in the logically necessary sense b/c that would be an oxymoron, right?):
“God is saying ‘let’s got to Broadway Cafe and talk over coffee.’
I think he mistakenly allowed his S. African context to bleed into the reading a bit too much.
Update: This post may confirm that I am a nerd.
