Ahab the Pansy?
By jason | March 20, 2008
Reading through 1 Kings right now and I am fascinated by the the relationships of Ahab & Jezebel & Elijah. I think that story could be turned into a huge Hollywood blockbuster (just a side note).
This morning I was struck by how Jezebel was really in charge of that kingdom. She seems to be the one who pulled the strings and she definitely wore the pants in the family.
1 Kings 21: Ahab came to Naboth to acquire his vineyard. He requested the vineyard, straight up. Or he would pay him money or give him another vineyard. (Who in his right mind would just give the vineyard up when another open is to get paid for it?)
Naboth won’t fork over the vineyard so Ahad went home and pouted. “And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and would eat no food” (4).
He’s still pouting when Jezebel came in and told him to sack it up (my paraphrase - or is it the TNIV?). “Do you now govern Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite” (7). She comes through on her promise by having Naboth framed and killed. Quite the lady.
