2 Dreaded Questions I Get As A Church Planter

      By admin | November 28, 2007

Invariably when I talk to someone about us starting LifeConnection I have several questions asked. Here are two that may just be the toughest to deal with.

Question #1: (After telling someone or them learning that I’m planting a church.) So who’s leading (or preaching, or teaching, or some other variant) this new church?

Ouch. I don’t really know what to make of this. I always ask myself where this question comes from, why are they asking this. Maybe sometime I should just get some stones and ask.

Question #2: (After telling someone or them learning that I’m planting a church.) So what do you do during the day?

Another one that leaves me scratching my head as to why they are asking this question. Do they think what I do is insignificant and therefore shouldn’t require my full attention? Do they think I’m lazy (I have my daily schedule/hours since September. I could show them precisely how I spend my day.)? Are they just confused about what it takes to lead a church? Would they ask this same question of a pastor in an existing/established church?

These are two questions I have received so often but I still really don’t know what to make of them or how to respond to them.

So is the “ouch” of the first question the implication that people are surprised to find out that you could pastor the church?

I would also wonder why people asked that—perhaps you could throw them some red meat and say “well, that’s why I’m talking to you about the church—you see we’re looking for a pastor…”

Still happens to me after 5 years. =) I always “pull a Hybels” — invite people to “this awesome church I go to” without telling them I’m the pastor.

That might be a good transition Chris. I’ll try that next time.

Glad to know it will continue Ben… lol… I Invite them to this awesome church I go to but warn them that they don’t really have a pastor yet and the guy who speaks is a bit sketchy. That way there’s no where to go but up with their expectations. :)

Oddly, when we were passing out flyers I had a few people ask me who the pastor of the church was, too. I’m sure I always gave them a confused look, too, because if it’s a new church I didn’t know why they thought they might know who the pastor was - at least that’s why I assumed they wanted to know. It’s not like we live in a small town! :)
